This course is suitable for all levels of writing and all forms: poetry, short story, novel, memoir, drama etc. Through a combination of instruction, discussion, and writing exercises, participants will gain a better understanding of the writing process in a friendly and supportive way. Participants will be encouraged to share their writing for group feedback. Individual feedback & guidance will also be offered by the instructor.

Topics covered will include: plot development, characterisation, setting, dialogue, scene, rhyme & rhythm, the poetic line, density of language, image & metaphor. editing & revising, submitting work for publication etc.

Instructor: Gerard Beirne holds an MFA in Creative Writing (EWU, USA) and has been teaching writing for 25 years. His first novel was shortlisted for The Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award and his collection of stories for The Danuta Gleed Literary Award 2015. He was shortlisted for the 2016 BGE Irish Book Awards.
