Employing over 15 locals John Byrne started his career in bookselling over 35 years ago.
John began his career working with the educational company in Talbot, Street Dublin. He then moved to Saint Patrick's College Maynooth, which was then owned by Kelly's of Galway. John took over the business in 1986, which he still has today. John moved the bookshop to the new campus when St Patrick's College become NUIM. The new premises, on two levels, caters for all the needs of students and staff and is also open to the public. The store stocks academic books, general books and stationery. John is a very well-known figure on campus.
John open the second book shop on the Main Street, Maynooth after a request from the then local school principal Mr Tom Ashe. This shop stocks everything from general books, fiction non-fiction and a large selection of children's books, schoolbooks new and second hand, stationary and a complete range of art supplies.
During the busy time from June to September John looks after all the local schools. He delivers the books personally and has a great relationship with the teachers as they appreciate the wonderful service he provides.
John is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce and is a well-known figure in the town. Despite pressure and competition from multi-chain bookshops he has managed to hold his place as an independent booksellers offering a great service which is both personal and professional.
John is a member of the Irish branch of the BA and plays an active role in all committee meetings and conferences. John employs 10 full staff and five part time staff during the busy season. John is great love and knowledge of books is one of the reasons for his success and enjoys his work and thrives on beating people every day.
